Army flying platforms / ufo research projects. Ever wonder what they did with these toys? Did some retired 3 star General take them to the ranch, and have a hellava grand time?

I figure millions of dollars, a couple years to get it to work, a couple trials and then it got shelved. I could be wrong. That amount of funding could probably have built a couple hydo electric dams, bridges, paved a hell of a lot of roads, or put a bunch of high school kids through college which would have rewarded USA with productive professionals with great lives who could have put their kids through college and then many people would be paying more taxes and less people would be poor and living off govt subsidies to poverty. Instead, they wasted the money.

The Mustang in the garage.. P51 F-6D to be exact, incredibly rare
Condensed version of the story: Selling P 51H Mustangs for 4000 meant buying up all the ones that had just become obsolete from the California Air National Guard, as they moved and switched to F86s, all the warehouses of P 51H parts, and all the aircraft were now surplus, and sold in scrapyards. A guy bought all he could, until the yard owner said no more until you get this P 51D out of the scrapyard... It was just taking up lots of space, and no one wanted the hassle when licensed and ready to fly P 51s were the same price.
So the guy buys it, and finally sells it and it gets moved from California to St Louis to some backyard, basement, and garage. Still a lot of crates and parts.
The rumors get out, kids played on it, and all the locals knew where it was. A guy flys in for a show, and buys it by first clearing and cleaning out the garage.. made someones wife very hapy to see all the plane parts go away! Trucked the parts from St Louis to Illinois.. 6 trucks and 5 trailers. The restoration was finished in 1993

Sandbar Mitchell, was finally lifted out of the Alaska wilderness last year, and is getting rebuilt at the Warbirds of Glory museum
Retired from the military, it went into firefighting duty in Alaska, until one flight when the engines went, and it was carefully landed on a sand bar in a river.
A very determined guy went all the way to make his dream of owning and restoring a B-25
He found that this one was the most likely available inexpensive one, and launched a kickstarter campaign, was successful, and got as much off it as possible to lighten the load, then helicoptered the last big part out
Believe it or not, the guy who owned it when it got stuck, his family still retained ownership. Yeah, 40 some years of sitting in the Alaska forests, and it had a title transfer. Wonder what the govt wants for taxes and fees on that!
When it got stuck, the good bits were removed to keep other fire fighting planes in good repair, the engines, wheels, etc.. the plane wasn't worth getting back... as one only cost about 5000 dollars, then.
She will be restored at the Brighton airport shop and then transported to the nearby Livingston County Airport for finial assembly. The future hope is to construct a public hangar-museum at Livingston County Airport for a public display and to hangar the aircraft when not flying on the airshow tour.
getting an airplane out of the back country was only a little bit easier because it's near a river and only 20 minutes from Fairbanks Alaska
